Galveston City Council extends COVID-19 emergency orders until April 30
Galveston, TX – April 3, 2020 – The Galveston City Council on Friday extended several emergency orders related to the COVID-19 public health response, including a stay-at-home order, a public beach closure, and restrictions on hotels, short-term rentals, bars and restaurants.
All City of Galveston emergency orders were extended to remain in effect until April 30, 2020, which is also in accordance with a State of Texas order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott requiring Texans to stay home unless they are taking part in essential services and activities in effect through the end of the month.
The health and safety of Galveston residents is paramount, and it is in coordination and guidance with health authorities, the county and the state that these decisions were executed.
The Galveston City Council will continue to hold public meetings weekly to assess the COVID-19 situation and to consider amending the orders, as decided by a vote of City Council. The orders include:
- AMENDED ORDER MANDATING CLOSURE OF SHORT-TERM RENTAL FACILITIES: This order strengthens an existing order requiring the closure of short-term rentals facilities. It shall be unlawful for an owner or a broker to lease a short-term rental. It shall also be unlawful for an individual to rent a short-term unit. All parties will be subject to daily occupancy fines.
- ORDER REQUIRING A MINIMUM PERIOD OF STAY FOR RECREATIONAL VEHICLES IN RV PARKS AND PROHIBITING PARKING OF RVS IN ANY PUBLIC PARK OR COMMERICAL PARKING LOT: RV parks are prohibited from leasing spaces to RV owners for fewer than 30 days.
- ORDER CLOSING BED AND BREAKFAST FACILITIES AND HOTELS: This order prohibits hotels and Bed and Breakfasts from renting rooms to guests. The only exception is for guests who are essential employees of an essential business, as defined in the order.
- ORDER MANDATING THAT CITIZENS STAY IN PLACE: Residents within the City of Galveston are ordered to stay at home unless performing essential activities or business. A list of essential activities and essential businesses is included in the order.
- ORDER MANDATING CLOSURE OF SHORT-TERM RENTAL FACILITIES: Short-term rentals operating within the City of Galveston are prohibited from renting or leasing short-term rentals.
- ORDER PROHIBITING OPERATION OF ELECTRONIC AMUSEMENT GAMES: Businesses located within the City of Galveston are prohibited from operating electronic amusement machines.
- ORDER MANDATING CLOSURE OF COMMERICAL FISHING PIER AND CHARTER BOAT OPERATIONS: Fishing piers and charter fishing operators are prohibited from operating within the City of Galveston.
- ORDER CLOSING PUBLIC BEACH ACCESS POINTS WEST OF THE WESTERN TERMINUS OF THE SEAWALL AND ORDER CLOSING PUBLIC BEACHES: Under these two orders, which are attached, it shall be a Class C misdemeanor if a person is found in violation of the order related to the closure of Galveston public beaches. These orders are enforced by the Galveston Police Department, the City Marshal’s Office and the Galveston Beach Patrol.
